Carol Benson, PhD

Carol Benson is an experienced educational development professional and academic with specialized interests in language-in-education policy change, the inclusion of Indigenous and non-dominant languages in teaching and learning, strategies for assessing emergent multilinguals, links between medium of instruction and female participation, and creating a multilingual habitus in educational development. She has worked in teacher education, curriculum development, policy implementation and program evaluation for education ministries in multilingual countries of the Asia/Pacific, Africa, and Latin America regions. She has held academic positions as an associate professor at Teachers College, Columbia University (2014-2022) and guest lecturer at Stockholm University (1998-2011). She is founder of MLE International, an organization designed to provide technical and human resources for implementation of multilingual education in low-income contexts. Carol is proficient in Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish and French.
