Master of Arts Degree Programs and Conflict Transformation (CONTACT)

Program Options:

The SIT Graduate Institute offers two ways to earn a Master of Arts with a specialization in conflict transformation.

The Joint CONTACT Graduate Certificate/Master of Arts, combines the 14-credit CONTACT Graduate Certificate, with six months of study in the on-campus Program in Intercultural Management (PIM), a professional practicum and a capstone thesis paper and presentation. This option is designed for working professionals or others who wish to pursue a PIM MA degree while minimizing the amount of time they spend away from their homes and careers. It is also designed for current participants of the CONTACT Graduate Certificate program who wish to apply their certificate program credits to the PIM MA.

Both current CONTACT Certificate participants and new applicants must complete the SIT Graduate Institute application process in order to be considered for this program. Please be sure to check the "Joint Graduate Certificate and Masters of Arts in Conflict Transformation" box located on the first page of the graduate and professional studies application form to indicate that you are applying for this program.

The regular on-campus Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation does not require any summer coursework or participation in CONTACT programs. SIT’s Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation provides a comprehensive education in the interrelated causes of contemporary conflict, as well as training in strategies that aid in conflict management and the transformation of intractable behaviors. Within a supportive learning community that emphasizes reflection, self-knowledge, and cultural awareness, participants develop practical skills in interethnic dialogue, intercommunal relationship building, negotiation, and group facilitation in preparation for positions with governments, academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, the media, the private sector, and other organizations concerned with social justice, nonviolence, and conflict resolution.
